Chixdiggit!
2012
(Fat Wreck Chords)
KJ Jansen used the long-awaited return of Canadian pop punk legends, Chixdiggit! to chronicle the final year of touring with his best friend and long time band mate, Mark O’Flaherty, who was considering retiring from the road. While presented as a single, very long song, 2012 is technically a number of songs stuck together as a single track. Each division represents a place that the band toured during the year.
The EP gives the fans exactly what they’ve grown to love about the band. The songs are fast and fun, with Jansen’s familiar whine and trademark sense of humor at the forefront. With each change of location, the music changes as well, preventing the song from becoming monotonous. There are plenty of sly jokes sprinkled throughout, from the Rush inspired artwork to mentions of hockey and The Smugglers. The Canadian content level is high, providing added value to fans from their home country, but as always the music is highly accessible to anyone who has long enjoyed the band.
Chixdiggit! are celebrating an admirable 25 years as a band with a solid 25 minutes of enjoyable pop punk music. A great addition to their catalogue, despite the odd packaging of an EP as a single song.
