Crowbar - The Serpent Only Lies

You really have to be in the right mindset before listening to sludge metal acts like Crowbar, or else the point can get lost. It took several listens for me to find the things I did and didn’t like on The Serpent Only Lies (their 11th full-length). At first, songs like “Falling While Rising” and “Plasmic and Pure” come off as tedious, but gain momentum once they have a chance to build up. Others like “I Am the Storm” and the title track are more straight-foreward right off the bat. As with any Crowbar release, there’s plenty of tight guitar riffs, but frontman Kirk Windstein’s vocals definitely aren’t for everyone (but then again, neither is Crowbar).
