Album Review: Danava – ‘At Midnight You Die’

Danava - At Midnight You Die

Danava
At Midnight You Die
(Tee Pee)

It’s been five years since we’ve heard any new music from Danava. In that time, the band became inactive and then started to become active again by touring. (They recently went out with Uncle Acid and the The Shrine.) RidingEasy reissued their previous full lengths, which were originally put out on the now defunct Kemado label. And now we have this new 7″, on Tee Pee Records, the band’s new home, which showcases them in top form.

The A-Side title track is a speedy riff rocker, that splits the difference between early-Iron Maiden and ’70s hard rock, complete with a ripping solo three quarters of the way in. It announces that they’re back in a big way. The B-Side, “My Spirit Runs Free” is taken from a 1979 underground horror film The Capture Of Bigfoot, and is an eerie slice of mystical psych folk, showcasing that the band can do more than just hit hard, like on the A-Side. (Even though, they’re so good at the art of rocking out.)

At Midnight You Die is an excellent reintroduction to Danava, and it gets you ready for the promised full length coming sometime in 2017 on Tee Pee. Mission accomplishment.
