If you haven’t already checked out Eagle Twin, do yourself a favor. They take the best of blues and doom and combine them into something that is slow, epic, focused and downright unique. Their most recent offering, A Thundering Heard, builds on the awesome sound they already established and takes things to the next level.
I don’t love quoting from press releases in reviews, but the band says this about the album:
“As the great snake grew giant fractal antlers of snakes and turned in upon itself creating a new world, the mountains rise, and the antlers stab through like trees across the landscape. The record begins with the hoofed and horned animals of our world running from mountains and forests on fire. Eerily harkening to the recent events in California and the massive devastation by fire across the land.”
That alone is pretty epic, and it sums up both the sound the band goes for and the odd and intentional nature of their lyrics. Only four tracks long, each song pays close attention to the sounds throughout the album and casts a sonic scape of riffs, percussion and vocals. And as much as the album flows and works as a cohesive piece, each song is also stand-alone good.
This is recommended listening for anyone who loves doomy metal or rock, and absolutely for established fans of the group.
