Album Review: Greywind – ‘Afterthoughts’

Greywind - Afterthoughts

Greywind
Afterthoughts
(Spinefarm Records)

Irish two-piece Greywind purposefully pull at the heartstrings with their style of rock. With stadium riffs and powerful lyrical content, the band fiercely give their slant, morphing into a real contender as their debut record Afterthoughts paints a picture of hardship and emotion. The album doesn’t teeter on the side-lines of mediocrity or repetitiveness either, it carries enough diversity, enabling the listener to delve in and love what they’re hearing, a sound which copes under the strain of exposure and scrutiny.

As the record plays on, it gains momentum, proving Greywind are not just another novelty. They gear themselves towards a promising position, standing side by side with the cluster of bands who are under the same musical umbrella. But, Greywind embody the rock charm and could push forward, withstanding a flurry of skepticism. And there’s plenty of acts structuring a pathway to greatness. Some fold, some progress and then disband. Some can’t handle the pressure, the heat of the battle. It’s such a normal occurrence these days as music cascades too much into a bubble-gum laced category. With this happening, many bands with tremendous talent fall through the cracks.

But, Greywind seem to have created an album full of big choruses and riffs galore. Their debut is an opus to be reckoned with, an array of songs bursting from the seams, propelling this band to the platform of relevance. And being relevant is fundamental. Afterthoughts holds so many high hitters. “Forest Blaze” showcases the balance of beautiful vocals and crunching guitars. It features tenacious lyrics too, which send a fable to the head. There’s also softer contributions like “Stitch On My Wings.” A song offering a subtle side, a musical journey of compassion. And take “Desolate,” a track beautifully constructed with mellow guitar lines the raise when the chorus batters through.

Greywind are a band competent with their arrangements. They’re an act born to create stadium sized heart hitters.
