Human Potential
Hot Gun Western City
(What Delicate Recordings)
If you were following bands from the DC area in the early 2000’s, you might recognize Andrew Becker, aka Human Potential, as being behind the drum kit on the early albums from Medications. More recently he’s done great, bizarre things with the experimental sounds of Screens. Treading a similar path to Screens, Becker’s iconoclastic sounds are propelled by rhythmic qualities and shards of dream-pop and prog-rock that make the best use out of unusual synth and ambient textures on both the light and dark side of the spectrum.
It’s about as far away as one can get from the standard sounds of indie-rock, occasionally bursting into calculated noise, but often remaining blurry, mysterious, and ominous- especially as the album gets deeper. Certainly for those who appreciate expansive, unorthodox music and ideas, Human Potential makes you earn your intrigue by carefully paying attention.
