Isotopes are North America’s #1 baseball worshiping punk band. Not to mention, they’re 1994 World Series Champions, which is probably why they named their record their most cherished title and memory. If Tenement and Masked Intruder decided to start a The Marked Men cover band while only talking about the World Series, it would spawn Isotopes. Their album 1994 World Series Champions via Stomp Records is fast, upbeat and campy in all the right ways.
The intro track “What We Do In Secret” is a perfect setup for the record with lines like “all of the other guys are nothing but phonies” show they’re ready to take on their enemies one strike at a time. Leading into “D.O.A.” and their single “Legend of George Brett”, the songs hold wailing guitar parts, melodic gang vocals and catchy chorus’. While 1994 World Series Champions is only 19 minutes long, it’s the perfect length for a band whose members’ names are Rad Jockstrap, Justin Safely, Tony Hustle, Rookie Rochelle, Andy A-Bomb, Dylan Dangerzone and Trevor Uppercutz.
The songs “Indian Summer” and “Rochelle Rochelle” prove to be the unrequited love songs of the record full of bright guitar tones. Also, who could miss all of the kooky baseball references? One of the last songs on the record “Gold Scorpion Gun” is a Jose Canseco worship song with lyrics like “look out Jose Canseco/I am Jose Canseco.” The last song “Sandlot Party” is self-explanatory; a track about the crew from the hit movie The Sandlot partying and “getting wrecked.”
It makes the most sense that only a bunch of Canadian dudes would be cheeky enough to take it upon themselves to start a baseball themed punk band and do it well. If you’re a fan of baseball, fast orgcore punk music and game day helmet nachos (who isn’t) then Isotopes’ 1994 World Series Champions is for you.
