Joan As Police Woman & Benjamin Lazar Davis
Let It Be You
(Reveal)
Joan Wasser isn’t on to resign her work to easy classification. Now over a decade into her catalog, the Brooklynite ventures into an experimental version of her earlier work, alongside fellow Brooklyn resident Benjamin Lazar Davis (Okkervil River, Cuddle Magic). Wasser’s soulful voice is, as always, a highlight, as she guides the pair deep into electro-pop that’s full of ’70s funk and influences of Central African Pygmy sounds that the pair gleamed from separate trips to the continent. Completely unusual, never predictable and seemingly avoiding all the things conventional, Wasser and Davis have made an album that we should not try to figure out, and instead just enjoy for its lush, iconoclastic take on sleek pop music.
