Album Review: King Witch – Under the Mountain

There is no shortage of doomy rock in the world, but Scotland-based King Witch do it with style.

Under the Mountain is the band’s debut album, but you wouldn’t know it from the clear flow of songs, and good balance of catchy riffs with the dark and the doomy. Vocalist Laura Donnelly has an amazing voice perfectly suited for classic-rock influenced stuff, and the rest of the band pull of the Sabbath-worship without skipping a beat, but manage to keep the riffs upbeat and original enough to hold the attention of the listener.

“Hunger” is one of the standout tracks on the record for its aggression and super-doomy riff structure, and the lyrics and  composition on the first song, “Beneath the Waves,” set the tone perfectly for the album. It’s clear that the band really put effort into how the music is presented, and what goes on during each song.

Lovers of old-school doom shouldn’t miss this record. It’s presented in a fresh, new way, and there is a lot of good stuff to be unpacked musically and lyrically in these nine tracks.
