You Know The Drill
Losing Streak
(Scylla Records)
You Know The Drill capture the true essence of pop punk with their driven and intense EP Losing Streak. The band from Birmingham, manage to commit to the genre with open arms and new ideas. They live in the moment, and it shows, they run with clear intent, keeping their guts intact.
Losing Streak is a formidable monster. It grabs the purpose of pop punk, enforcing a master-plan, but the band don’t take themselves too seriously, they nod at the colossal bands in their sector, but don’t set out to imitate them. The sneers are reminiscent of old Blink 182. That band changed the focus and pattern of pop punk, they added their notable slant and tenacity, proving themselves again and again. But, You Know The Drill deliver content that is lyrically better, it’s complex and metaphorical, eclipsing the pop punk masters.
Yes, it’s an audacious statement, but this band have the strategic power to go on and champion a genre that has still to take off in Britain. Blackpool act Boston Manor have taken the pop punk brand and have given it slap on the face to wake it up. You Know The Drill are there to keep it awake.
Losing Streak is a blast of musical muscle. It drives home the pop punk saga, but it also conveys troubled times. The lyrics are drenched in melancholia, but they’re proudly distributed freely throughout the EP.
The EP begins with “Peer Pressure.” It stamps its approval straight away, proving to be a strong starting point. The guitar tone is volatile but the vocals come through clearly. The lyrics describe the substantial weight of wasted years. “Heads Up” blossoms into a perfect pop punk score. The wordplay conveys a destructive past. “Repose” starts slowly with a subtle overtone; it then bites deeply with a stark riff.
You Know The Drill commit to their chosen genre with desire and intent. They have a great future.
