Loose Tooth
Big Day
(Lame-O Records / Father/Daughter Records)
On Big Day, the second full length from Philly-based Loose Tooth, the band shows an immense amount of growth in a short-period of time. Their 2013 EP What It Is, was promising and 2015’s Easy Easy East was a definite improvement, but Big Day boasts a band much more confidant in both their playing and songwriting.
You can hear snatches of everyone from Pavement and Dinosaur Jr to the Breeders throughout the nine tracks here, and the band’s tendency to slip in and out of various genres effortlessly, sometimes in the span of the same song, makes for a pretty impressive effect There is a strong early ‘90s college rock vibe on songs like the album closer “Fish Boy” or the near instrumental “Dog Year” (there are just a few, hard to decipher vocals toward the end), but also nods to garage rock and classic emo (think D.C. tough kids emo rather than early aughts Hot Topic emo). There is a little redundancy on a couple of tracks here, but not enough to detract from the songs that do stand out on their own, which is most of them.
Big Day is an impressive evolution for a band that is just a few years old.
