Luke Winslow-King
I’m Glad Trouble Don’t Last Always
(Bloodshot Records)
I’ve listened to a handful of divorce inspired albums this year, and this time it’s slide guitar genius Luke Winslow-King, who is as adept at turning tragedy into art as he as at playing blues and gospel sounds. Now handling vocals duties by himself (his former vocal companion is now his ex-wife), Winslow-King takes the rich influences of Memphis, Chicago and New Orleans along for the healing, as the songs blend pop and rock into deep webs of Americana and roots foundations with both grit and beauty. While it’s lyrically singular and dark, sometimes desperate, it’s musically wide, encompassing blues, jazz and country ideas into a sorrowful and honest masterpiece.
