Album Review: Matt North – Above Ground Fools

Matt North - Above Ground Fools

Matt North
Above Ground Fools
(Round Badge)

Long time session drummer and former actor and comedian, Matt North’s first solo album reads like an autobiography of romantic failures, legal troubles and jealousy. Now residing in Nashville, well into his 40’s and having learned how to also play piano and guitar, North teams up with musicians who have played with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle to flesh out these country-rock gems that sound like best singer-songwriter in every little town with a large amount of forthrightness and an equal amount of talent. Soothing organs, strategic horns, backing female vocals and a twangy feel are never in short supply here, as North moves swiftly between classic rock, soulful sounds, and folk-rock spoken word influences. Even though the subject matter is often dark, this is quite fun and witty and one of the best singer-songwriter albums so far this year.
