Album Review: NEUTRINOS! – Surf Cult

Neutrinos!
Surf Cult EP

There’s a special power in a simple guitar riff that mostly goes overlooked. If it’s amplified and distorted the right way, a basic chord can resonate emphasis better than the most technical ones. The only difference is the rapid fire progression versus a song being all over the place. Attleboro, MA punks Neutrinos are keeping a no nonsense approach with their Surf Cult EP that came out on February 25. It exudes rock & roll’s youthful exuberance while crossing through various eras of the style.

The trio of Preston Masterson on guitar, John Cook on bass and Andrew Schwegler on drums mix vintage pop tones with rebellious grit. There’s a fast paced onslaught of rhythms and riffs with doses of ‘60s surf being mixed in. It’s a combination of a devil may care attitude and heartfelt thoughts resulting in a pleasantly enjoyable record. In pure punk fashion, there’s only one track that’s over two minutes long. There’s definitely an artistic nod to classic acts like The Ramones and The Jam as well.

“Pizza Party” has Masterson on vocals singing about the band’s favorite food and how it can guarantee a good time. It’s a tad comical lyrically but trust me, Neutrinos take their pizza very seriously. One of the tracks that leans towards the pop realm is “Surfer Girl”. Cook is on vocals for this one while Preston backs him up on the mic for a flurry of energy and catchiness. With a dirty tone and lighting fast structure, “Highway Robbery” is a rager that scorches from start to finish.

Once you start listening to the EP you might be surprised that it was recorded in Masterson’s living room. How did Neutrinos get away with it without the neighbors calling the cops? We’ll never know. What you should know is that once you give the Surf Cult EP a listen you’ll be convinced to join a cult where there’s free pizza and endless amounts of soda. It’s what the Neutrinos would want.
