Something of a supergroup in their own right, Nightmarer are a little like the “where are they now” of the really good early-2000s death metal scene. Featuring members from The Ocean and War from a Harlot’s Mouth, these guys don’t miss a beat with their musical precision, literally. The latest record, and first to be released after their demo, Cacophony of Terror is pure terror, and pure awesomeness.
Based on vocalist John Collett’s literal nightmare that people are falling from the sky, the theme of the record is bleak and surreal. It purposely captures the horror of not being able to wake from an endless nightmare, a feeling some are having way too often in 2018.
Even more impressively, the album was recorded across great distances, as some of the band members live in Germany and some in the U.S. “Bleach” is one of the heaviest and most unrelenting songs on the record, and “Swansong” wraps things up beautifully, and tragically, at the end.
This is a must for anyone who loves brutal death metal, and wants it with a little more finesse and a little less brutality.
