Album Review: This Obsession – A Confrontational Effort

This Obsession - A Confrontational Effort

My first impression of this album was that it reminded me of Alkaline Trio’s early days colliding with Blink-182’s Dude Ranch. However, the more I listened, I heard something nuanced under the surface. I’m a huge fan of the three-piece, and even though there are limitations that come with the territory, when it’s good it’s really tough to beat. I’m happy to report that in this instance it’s done very well. Our two main vocalists, Mark on guitar and Jessica on bass, sound like their voices were made for each other. As for Jon on drums, his playing here is a deal-maker. His accents, subtle flares, and change-ups keep each transition and new part interesting while controlling the dynamics as if he were a conductor in a symphony.

“Arm In Arm” is a great opening track as it gives you plenty of what’s in store: upbeat, catchy songs full of gripping vocals. Both singers have a few tricks up their sleeves being able to go from soft and sweet to forceful and in your face. In “My Own Grave” the two go back and forth on lead, and the next moment in “Punk Ass Kid” their harmonies will get you singing along in no time. “Shitting” reminded me of those manic, short Descendents songs and is one of the many times the band shows you that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The longest track, “Yo…I’m No Good” is one of my favorites with its earworm of a chorus and the most epic breakdown/build-up on the album. When it comes down to it, A Confrontational Effort is one of those records where the songs go effortlessly from one to another. In fact, it doesn’t slow down until the final track, “Paint Your Bed”, which indicates that, yes, this is the end, but you’ll wanna hit play again. And again.
