Album Review: Oozing Wound – ‘Whatever Forever’

Oozing Wound - Whatever Forever

Oozing Wound are quite something. Have you ever listened to something and immediately thought, “What the Hell is this? I want more of it!” With a name like that, their music is bound to have a visceral reaction, and boy does it ever. Any descriptions of the Chicago-based group’s sound fail to do this wonderful insanity justice, and part of that is how well Oozing Wound morphs its central sonic form into different iterations throughout Whatever Forever. The band write some form of crossover thrash, but it’s also equally influenced by fuzzy stoner rock, noise rock, grindcore, and sludge. It’s basically just very loud and vicious, except when it’s not, and there’s a definite post-punk element that adds a nice, moody middle finger to the band’s style. Thankfully, it’s evident that behind all the sneering, loud as Hell guitars, and pummeling rhythm section that the band actually gives a shit. Behind the joyously full veneer is a load of snarky, furious leftist vitriol that highlights how deep the band’s punk ethos goes. Oozing Wound won’t be for everyone (that’s a weird sentence to type), but for those that want music that is just as disinterested in labels as it is interested in giving a shit about everyone despite their labels, then you need Whatever Forever in your life.
