The Orwells
Terrible Human Beings
(Atlantic)
My introduction to The Orwells first came at an Arctic Monkeys show they opened for in 2014 that I was working at. Backstage after their set, I actually got the chance to meet lead singer Mario Cuomo, where I genuinely told him how impressed I was, and how I thought they were one of the best new acts to come along in quite some time (not to mention they had blown the eventual headliners off the stage that night). I completely meant it, and since then, I’ve been following what they do with much enthusiasm. Their stripped-down, back-to-basics garage rock is a welcomed breath of fresh air in this ever-so-often generic music world.
On their third full-length effort, they maintain the same high caliber of energetic indie rock, and churn out a host of catchy anthems like “Ring Pop,” “Heavy Head,” “Vacation,” “Last Call,” and “M.A.D.,” all far superior than any of the singles released from the album thus far. If you haven’t heard these guys yet, go in to it with an open mind, and you might just be glad that you did (and while you’re at it, check out they’re older releases too if you get a chance, all of which are definitely worth a listen).
