Album Review: Rachael Kilgour – Rabbit In The Road

Rachael Kilgour
Rabbit In The Road
(NewSong Recordings)

An extremely intimate album of folk melodies and devastating subject matter, it’s clear that Kilgour’s recent divorce was the impetus for this departure from her usual social topics. While themes of love, loss and betrayal are right out in the open, so are dense strings, sweeping orchestral support and powerful singing. Despite the difficult autobiographical topics, Kilgour never sounds upset, but rather solemn, and appears to have restructured her intense pain into gorgeous, aching, emotionally stirring song craft that’s indie-folk with abundant forthrightness.
