Album Review: Raven King – Self-Titled

Raven King
Self-Titled

Raven King are putting a different spin on alternative rock. The act out of Providence, RI are incorporating groovy and jazzy tones, a melodic vibe and emotional intensity to create music that leaves a lasting impression. Their self-titled debut that came out on March 17th is the product of that while exhibiting a versatility that few of their local contemporaries can match. It walks the fine line between being intense and mellow. No song sounds the same with each one offering something different than the rest.

Self-produced by the band along with Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, MA handling mixing duties, the album has a professional audio quality that’s crystal clear. All the instruments and vocals come through nicely with neither one overpowering the other. Raven King is an example of two artistic opposites coming together. Guitarist AJ Bucci has a smooth and somber vocal delivery while bassist Gerrit Curti is up front and in the ears when he screams. Will Boisseau provides rhythmic excellence on drums to serve as the glue that sticks it all together.

The lead single “Drool” is velvety and glistening with harmony courtesy of Bucci. When the chorus hits it changes up to being an atmospheric and vibrant track that strikes the senses. Hard-hitting and spine-tingling is the best way to describe “Diminished”. Straight out of the ‘90s comes “Lost Token”, absolute ripper that sounds like old-school Soundgarden. The way Curti’s vocals sound going along with Bucci’s riffs is stellar.

Whether you’re craving a bit of musical nostalgia or looking for something that’ll give your music taste a boost, kill two birds with one stone with Raven King’s self-titled debut. It’s a blast from the past along with being a solid contemporary record. Show it to your flannel wearing friend who’s in his 40s or the hipster next door and chances are they’ll appreciate it. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem The Raven that includes the famous quote “Quote the raven, nevermore.” You can quote me in saying that once you check out this album then your ears will be wanting more.
