Album Review: R.I.P. – ‘In The Wind’

RIP - In The Wind

R.I.P. delivers a cryptic ghoulish style of psychedelic rock that fringes on doom and punk. A quick comparison might be quickly drawn to LA’s legendary act Saint Vitus, Pentagram, or early Cathedral. R.I.P. call their brand of music ‘street doom’, and strike hard heavy riffs over enough fuzz and distortion to be somewhere on Sleep levels.

Tracks like “Smoke & Lightning” and “Black Leather” are likable nods to classic doom metal experiences, with trippy solos, crusty punk rock chords, and melodramatic dirges. What matters, is that this band writes music well enough that a song could be about how sad the lead singer is he lost his puppy, and it would still be doom.

I would say In The Wind is definitely a catchy album worthy of a listen. If a band can make a 7:25 rager sound epic and not boring, then they’re definitely going to get a few plays on my list. Much of the music will take you to high places, but there are some songs that will just bring you down to earth – probably somewhere in a twilight lit desert.  The instrumental “Tombstone” fits that description pretty much, a brief 2:29 walk off of the map that sticks out over all others on the album. When reaching out for the atmosphere, “Brave In The Grave” will take you to that place. In The Wind is a down tuned space trip!
