Album Review: Rise of Avernus – Eigengrau

This dark, symphonic, doomy and depressive release by Rise of Avernus is perfect for a bleak winter, day or if you’re just plain feeling like something epic and downtempo.

The band has been making music since 2011, and are no stranger to their already-honed sound, although it does seem that they’ve done a fair amount of refining on this record. Their fourth studio released, Eigengrau sounds really polished and professional, but still maintains the edge and hard-hitting power that they were known for on their other recordings.

“Gehenna” is one of the most powerful tracks on the record, pulling from all kinds of influences, and showing a strong orchestral and symphonic influence that really sets them apart from other depressive doom bands. “Forged in Eidolon” is classic funeral doom goodness with some added melodic elements, and a really catchy track despite its brooding nature.

Definitely check this out if you’ve been following this band or like orchestral, symphonic doom. Rise of Avernus are strong musicians, and the album is cohesive and enjoyable to listen to. However, if you’re not a fan of the symphonic, this probably isn’t for you. You must like keyboards and orchestral elements to enjoy this one.
