Those who dig the uniqueness of this Canadian/South Korean band will be stoked on their new compilation album, Indignant Force of Great Malevolence.
Thy Sepulchral Moon, the band famous for working on everything via collaboration, just released a special highlight of their previous records on vinyl. The first five tracks, each just entitled “Spell 1,” “Spell 2,” etc., are from Incantations Inciting Demise. Six through ten are from Contemptuous Retaliation Storm and 11-13 are demo versions.
As always, the songs are fast and rollicking, with dark interludes and heavy guitar work. There really aren’t many complaints to be had. However, in 2017/2018, one has to wonder, why a compilation album? This made sense back before the days of the internet, when certain records went out of print. But now, with the ability to call up anything with a few keystrokes, it seems odd to re-release music.
Still, the demo tracks are a treat; it’s always fun to hear how raw and aggressive untouched black metal recordings can be. And for the collector and major fan, having this on vinyl is going to be awesome. Plus, for a band that is all about aesthetics, it makes sense to focus on putting out the perfect product. Still, whenever a release like this comes out, I can’t help but wonder when there will be new music from the group.
This will definitely end up a staple in the collection of every die-hard fan. For those new to the group, however, simply checking out these past three records will do.
