Tyrannosorceress
Shattering Light’s Creation
(Tofu Carnage Records)
Somewhere deep in the heart of Texas, a new creature was born. A group of magical scientists decided to create a hybrid animal, a re-imagining of a world we once new. In this underground lab, a new breed of dinosaur was spliced together from DNA extracted from the oil fields of the Lone Star State: the Tyrannosorceress. These scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should. They said it would not reproduce and grow out of their control because they only found the DNA from a female and would continue harvesting females from the original source. They forgot that, simply, life, uh, finds a way, and she is angry and hungry.
Hence, here we are with a behemoth of Jurassic proportions (note: the real T-Rex lived during the Cretaceous Period, not the Jurassic Period…). This hybrid beast has a ferocious appetite for riffs and a magical ability to create a harrowing atmosphere. Unlike many of their atmospheric compatriots, this creature follows a different motto: “Must go faster!” This actually improves the songs, with their extremely tight musicianship and a growing sense of dread that rarely stops for air. Shattering Light’s Creation is an exceptionally melodic record, and the push and pull of the hyper-blasting sections with the few mood setting moments works quite well. Tyrannosorceress have a sound similar to fellow Americans Nightbringer, except with a more traditional and angry angle. There’s a controlled chaos here in the familiarity, which elevates the record significantly.
The one problem, and this is often an issue when playing God, is the Tyrannosorceress grew a little too big and out of control. There are three songs longer than eight minutes, and all of them could be tightened up for maximum bite. That said, the impact of this impressive debut record may be felt more in future incarnations. The bones are there for future black metal greatness, even if this first impression does not quite stick the landing. Tyrannosorceress are a very talented young group, and the potential is certainly there for more on future releases.
