Album Review: Voltang – ‘Bad Sounds’

Voltang - Bad Sounds

Voltang
Bad Sounds
(Self-Release)

Canadian chaos that is all at once thrash, hardcore, punk, and noise, Voltang’s 2nd release sounds like the soundtrack to a movie about an escape from an insane asylum. While strained vocals and the manic pace are frenetic in all the best ways, there’s also cleaner singing and strong, eclectic musicianship throughout, making these guys an anomaly in the hardcore scene, even with a subtle blues influence. Self-described as ‘raunch & roll’, I am reminded of Refused, early ’80s metal, and even ’90s post-punk in this inimitable album that’s both abrasive and alluring.
