Witchskull
The Vast Electric Dark
(Ripple Music)
Witchskull rules, and I could tell that within the first fifteen seconds of the album. It’s a hard effect to have, but when a band can capture someone that easy and that quick, there’s obviously some magic running through this Aussie trio.
The Vast Electric Dark isn’t just a cool sounding album title, it’s a damn ass kicker. This shit is more than just a reprieve from boring unenthusiastic doom metal. It’s a completely righteous fun time, which explores elements of doom, prog, space rock, and other stoner-esque genres.
Marcus De Pascale has an abrasive and infectious vocal style, which goes perfectly with the strange mysteries of Witchskull’s lyrics. Hard and heavy are the grooves on this rager. You can feel the love just dripping out of De Pascale’s fingers.
Witchskull has the tightest rhythms you could ask for too. Joel Green hammers out shockwaves that mean something on the kit, and Tony McMahon drives the spine through eight funky tracks that hop between down tuned Sabbath jams and psychedelic monsters.
There is so much gold in this band. I would say this album definitely gets five stars. This album may just transcend the entire star system. That was totally a space rock joke, but Witchskull are not a joke – they are the real thing.
