Album Review: Wolves Scream – Vestiges

Wolves Scream
Vestiges
(Redfield Digital)

I’ve always appreciated reviews that reference similar bands or have a RIYL section, for the simple reason that there is way too much music out there, and it helps to know when to put a record at the top of your listening list. Belgian metalcore group Wolves Scream need only one reference point, and it’s the biggest problem with Vestiges. The album sounds almost exactly like the last two Architects records combined. Now, granted, those were excellent albums that combined Botch-ian metalcore with more technical, electronic, and post-rock flourishes. However, it’s difficult to know how to grade a band when they are basically coloring within the lines.

That said, these Belgians are coloring book artists. It’s important to mention here that absolutely nothing in Vestiges is sub-par. Aggressive riffs are married with gang-vocal choruses and a heavy dose of atmospheric metal. Further, Wolves Scream smartly limit their breakdowns, which sharpens their effect when they come up. It should also be noted that there are a whole host of excellent riffs and sonic transitions and build-ups. The group absolutely know what they’re doing, and they do it very well. They also put a greater emphasis on atmosphere and technicality than later-era Architects, and it’s easy to see that as their best path forward.

So yes, Wolves Scream often feels like Store Brand Architects, but it’s entirely possible this band and Architects were manufactured in the same plant- have you ever seen them in the same place? See. While this treads dangerously close to a whole heap of back-handed compliments, Vestiges is a Hell of an enjoyable listen and is very well done. If the band can further develop their own stamp, the future is very bright.
