Album Review: In Her Own Words – ‘Unfamiliar’

In Her Own Words - Unfamiliar

In Her Own Words
Unfamiliar
(InVogue Records)

In their early days, In Her Own Words were much more reminiscent of A Day To Remember than Neck Deep, and while that was the sound that made me a fan back in 2011, their straight-singing punk/rock style is also capable and obvious with potential. Unfamiliar, the band’s label debut, has several tracks that are really standout, like the soaring “I Would Sit…”, the somehow bouncy, upbeat sounding “Silver Lights”, the previously released hit “Reverie” (from their 2013 EP, Everything I Used To Trust), the strained and passionate “Drag Me Down”, and the angry “Cut and Dry”. It’s a bit of a scattered record in its great moments, but the more Unfamiliar is played, the better it stands. It’s probably safe to bet their sophomore release will take the lessons here and make for an awesome return.
