Album Review: Young Fox – Sky Beats Gold

Young Fox
Sky Beats Gold
(Spartan Records)

Young Fox continues with their moody atmospheric drive on this their debut LP, building on the solid foundation they first hinted at with their 2014 EP. Suggesting everyone from Manchester Orchestra to classic Rush, Sky Beats Gold is 10 tracks of heavy, but impressively diverse snatches of ambient soundscapes. The guitar work in particular is pretty inspiring, thanks to front man Luke Cypher and Martin Lunn (who also put in time with the metal band Zao).

While their EP, Predecessors, is only a few years old, the band has still managed to show growth in the intervening years, making Sky Beats Gold a more cohesive album. Lyrically the band drifts occasionally into pretention territory, but not enough to take too much away from the enjoyment of this one.

Songs like “Sometimes the Monster Win,” and “Atom Smasher” offer hints at a band that is destined for bigger things.
