We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Star Rover’s music video for their song “And Then I Remembered” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming album I May Be Lost But I’m Laughing, which is scheduled to be released on October 19, 2018 through 11A Records. You can pre-order the album here.
“And Then I Remembered” features golden-voiced Dr. Stuff, who approached the band in 2016, via Instagram. Dr. Stuff was a fan of their 2014 Western Winds Bitter Christians EP, and he wanted to find out if they had any new work in the pipeline. As they messaged back and forth, Star Rover became more and more curious about who he might be, since he seemed to know a lot about music and the scene in general. They forgot about him for a while, but in 2017, when they posted about recording a new record, Dr. Stuff wrote again saying he’d like to collaborate, and he suggested he record vocals on one of their tracks.
Will and Jeremy were apprehensive to say the least! Dr. Stuff had never said where he lived and he had no followers or posts. But they both had a strange, intuitive feeling about the opportunity, so they gave Dr. Stuff a shot. Shortly after sharing “And Then I Remembered” with him, Dr. Stuff sent back a recording that shocked and moved them, deeply. There was something familiar about his voice, and his lyrics were marvelous, but they couldn’t quite place it. Dr. Stuff never admitted who he was, nor where he lived, and he wouldn’t accept any form of payment. In fact, shortly after sending the band the completed track, Dr. Stuff halted email contact and deleted his Instagram account. Star Rover never heard from him again.
Director Julia Barrett-Mitchell declares, “Whether or not they’ll live happily ever after in the end of the video wasn’t as important to me as the realization that they’re trying again. In life, we’ll all struggle, but we have to remember to keep showing up to do the work. And that’s what the characters finally do; they let their guards down and they show up for each other.
“The gender-reversal wasn’t an attempt at making any grandiose statements about gender roles as much as it was an easy way to make a familiar nuclear-family story feel fresh and add some playfulness,” she adds. “As a collaboration between bunch of queer artists in the year 2018, it’s nice to have the freedom to normalize a gender reversal like that. Regardless, the gender reversal or parenthood wasn’t what this video was about. It didn’t really matter who was the man of the house or who was the mother. This story is about partnership, about loss, and about healing.”
