We’re pleased to bring you the stream of Ceremony’s synth remix of their song “Further I Was” (listen below). The track is on our flexi included with issue #48, which also features Ceremony on the cover – art by Jacob Speis; photo by Nedda Afsari.
Below is a short preview of our Issue 48 cover story (written by Derek Nielsen), an interview with Ceremony vocalist Ross Farrar and guitarists Andy Nelson and Anthony Anzaldo about their new album. To read the full story, pick up a copy of New Noise Issue 48 here!
“Almost no band needs a sixth album,” Andy Nelson, guitarist for the Bay Area punk band Ceremony, affirms, “unless you’re, like, Yo La Tengo or Sonic Youth or Wire. Those are bands we feel a kinship with. But especially after a really long break in releasing new music, we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t absolutely worth people’s time.”
Dropping Aug. 23 via Relapse Records, In the Spirit World Now is not only Ceremony’s sixth record (purchase here), it will also be referred to as their synth record. While early Ceremony albums came crammed with a cacophony of distortion and traffic-accident song structures, In the Spirit World Now is a heaping helping of new wave synthpop produced by Will Yip and mixed by Ben Greenberg.
That the band have gradually distanced themselves from the world of hardcore powerviolence has been well documented within the music community—there’s even a run of t-shirts that read, “I Miss the Old Ceremony”—but this album is still going to turn heads.
“There’s a lot of wild shit on here, but it still sounds like a Ceremony record from the first needle drop, even if you compare it to our last album,” Nelson says, referencing their polarizing 2015 release, The L-Shaped Man. “This album is technicolor. The last one was more monochromatic.”
