JD Wright grew up in the Northern reaches of Michigan. Though characterized by lush nature scenes, Wright felt a sense of desolation. His time up North has greatly influenced the stories he tells on Lake Effect. The record is filled with personal emotions and experiences aimed at the ugly truths uncovered in his hometown.
In “Teeth,” Wright chips at the surface of small town life, exposing the secrets hiding beneath it. Wright’s sharp lyricism carves out pictures in your imagination, leaving you with the faint sights and sounds of his hometown.Though showered in the bright jangle of acoustic guitars, “Teeth” sits in a pool of bitter contempt for the harsh realities that hide in the shadows of our everyday lives.
Wright’s purpose for writing “Teeth” was to face these shadows head-on. As he began writing, the flow of emotions and ideas inspired the rest of the songs on the record. “Anyone who’s lived in a small town like mine knows that their town has more skeletons than most of their neighbors would care to admit,” he says. “As I was writing [‘Teeth’], I remember thinking to myself that there is more of a story here than I could possibly fit in a single 4 minute song.”
JD Wright’s knack for storytelling creates a visceral listening experience. Lake Effect combines these animated scenes with strong instrumentation that radiate with as much emotion as Wright himself. His music finds the balance between charming folk-rock and the heart-wrenching lyricism of modern alternative/emo artists.
