We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Matthew Ryan’s new song “Summer Never Ends” (listen below). The track is taken from his upcoming album Hustle Up Starlings, which is scheduled to be released on May 12th. The album was produced by Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem and features Ryan Adams’ drummer Brad Pemberton.
Matthew Ryan comments on the song:
“I used to think love was a kind of agreement between two hearts to be vulnerable; where both had knives, but neither used them. There’s a wilderness in everything we do that means anything. Love is probably the most important unmapped wilds we come to ‘know.’ And more and more I’m concluding that true romance has scars and bruises, and still leans in for a kiss.
‘Summer Never Ends’ drew some of its blood from Camus’ beautiful ‘Invincible Summer’ quote. It closes ‘Starlings’ because it expresses exactly what I’ve concluded. Beyond all the references to desire, and conflict, and sex, and the lost and found, there’s something else.
I wish my songs were easier to talk about. There’s a lot of space between the lines, a lot of information, and they’re dependent on experience.”
Hustle Up Starlings deftly fuses gritty Replacements-style rock and post-punk with moody Americana, all tied together by Ryan’s gravelly whisper vocals. The songs reveal a disarming vulnerability – loneliness and anxiety rearing their heads as Ryan reflects on what was and what might be.
