We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Primitive Weapons’ new album Surrender Yourself (listen below), which is scheduled to be officially released October 12, 2018 through Party Smasher Inc.
About the band:
Primitive Weapons’ first official output was a three-song, self-titled EP released in 2011 that featured what Pitchfork called “a bombshell of a single” – the track “Black Sheep And Prodigal Sons.” The EP was produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, The Melvins). The band has since worked with Dean Baltulonis (Sick of it All, Madball, Modern Life Is War) on all of their albums: 2012’s The Shadow Gallery (Prosthetic Records), 2016’s The Future of Death, and the forthcoming Surrender Yourself.
Surrender Yourself proves that Primitive Weapons’ days of dropping bombs on an unsuspecting public are far from over – if anything, the band’s songwriting has only gotten sharper even as it has become more expansive both sonically and lyrically. Opener “Hideous Heart” sets the tone perfectly, launching with a filthy industrial dirge before giving way to riffs and rhythms as indebted to Slayer as they are Killing Joke. Castillo wrote the emotionally raw lyrics – “I don’t want you to see my hideous heart” – as a sort of mea culpa to his bandmates following a blow-up while they were on tour.
In the past the band has toured with The Dillinger Escape Plan as well as established a resident home at the legendary Saint Vitus Bar. The band just came off of an East Coast run with Glassjaw and Quicksand and will be embarking on a US tour with Cult Leader and God Mother this November – see dates below.
