We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Takers Leavers’ music video for their song “Empty Glow” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s Break & Bloom EP, which is available here.
The band commented on the song:
Empty Glow – the remaining feeling after ‘love’ has faded, ‘Empty Glow’ is an internal struggle to realize that we are the only ones bringing ourselves down. ‘It’s just a curse that I’d cast on myself’ details this. Throughout the song, the narrator realizes that many of these flaws are rooted in how we saw the adults in our lives act (‘devils in the shape of your father’s pride’). From the time we first wrote this song to when we recorded it, we did not change much instrumentally or structurally. We were proud right out of the gates. Melodically, it changed quite a bit because we knew we wanted to use this song as a single and knew it had a story to tell.
About the band:
Offering a fusion of rock with post hardcore and punk influences, Takers Leavers are carving their path to success with powerful lyrics and impactful storylines. The name stems from the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, simplifying the concept of society/human behavior and our impact on the planet. “Takers” reap more than need, while “Leavers” take what they need, and leave the rest. This duality shows a subtle balance, a yin and yang, and is vital to how the band was created. Forming in 2016, the Costa Mesa, CA quintet consists of David Baqi (vocals/guitar), Karem Idrees (bass/vocals), Robby Friend (guitar), and John Gee (drums). With a deep history of playing together in varying bands and touring, the members came together to find a creative outlet. Takers Leavers launched as an avenue to find unity in an aspect of life that prides itself on individuality. This very idea fuels the band to swim deeper into that chasm of creation.
Pulling influences from acts like Circa Survive, Every Time I Die, and Blink 182, Takers Leavers offer a dynamic sound that dives into lyrical content that is both melancholy-like and hopeful on a relatable level, speaking and connecting to the listener in a straightforward manner. Lyrically, the band finds inspiration from personal trials of loss, love, ache, anger, and other related emotions. This blends with themes of mental health, the human condition, and how we relate to our earth and animals.
Kicking off their career with Filthy Animals in 2016, the EP, which featured “Give Up The Ghost,” was engineered, produced, mixed and masted by Jeff Sahyoun at Suburban Soul Studios. With the tremendous success and recognition from the EP, the band opened for acts Emarosa, He Is Legend, and Mest as well as establishing a regular appearance at Southern California Emo Nights.
Fast-forward to 2018, Takers Leavers have put out their sophomore release, Break & Bloom, which was engineered, produced, and mixed by Adam Sisco at Twin Star Studios and mastered by Paul Leavitt.
