From Richard Dawson and R.A.P Ferreira to Julie Doiron and Pipe-eye, here is all the new noise you might have missed from this week.
Richard Dawson & Circle – Henki (Domino Records)
Eccentric English singer songwriter Richard Dawson, fresh off the release of one of his best records, 2020, has teamed up with Finnish rock group Circle for this latest release. Dawson’s records are known for poignant lyrical composition, tackling the greatest themes of humanity. This LP is no different.
The sound, reminiscent of medieval folk, is electric on Henki. In the ever-present quest to push new boundaries Dawson and company delve into post-metal territory. This is yet another instant classic and not one to be passed up!
Enki is out on Domino Records.

R.A.P Ferreira – the Light Emitting Diamond Cutter Scriptures (Ruby Yacht)
R.A.P Ferreira has operated under many names including the legendary Milo and Scallops Hotel. His latest pseudonym has been the title of some of the rapper’s best work. Twenyty-twenty’s Purple Moonlight Pages was certainly one of the years highlight releases.
The Light Emitting Diamond Cutter Scriptures is a continuation of that sound, featuring effortlessly flowing beats, creative sampling, and abstract-yet-profound lyrics. It’s one of the few hip-hop records that blends genres with such ease. Ferreira dips his toes into a deeply psychedelic sound that is still firmly rooted into classic hip hop.
The Light Emitting Diamond Cutter Scriptures is out on Ruby Yacht.

Julie Doiron – I Thought Of You (You’ve Changed Records)
Julie Doiron, former member of famed Canadian indie-folk group Eric’s Trip, appears to turn over a new leaf on this latest record. Between her work with Eric’s Trip and frequent collaborations with Phil Elverum, it would be easy to paint Doiron into the corner of solemn folk tunes.
I Thought Of You is unabashedly filled with upbeat energy. From the opener “You Gave Me The Key,” it’s clear what direction this record is going in. That’s not to say there aren’t softer moments from time to time, but they are fewer and further between and tonally bright.
I Thought Of You is out on You’ve Changed Records.

Pipe-eye – Dream Themes (Flightless Records)
It’s hard to talk about this record without mentioning King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The band has built such a large world of musicians together into one scene, but it would be a shame if this record were to be put into a King Gizzard subcategory. Pipe-eye is the solo project of long time Gizzard guitar player Cook Craig.
Over the course of a few records, Craig his built Pipe-eye into something of its own, a unique blend of psychedelia and summertime grooves. This is a summer jams record, which is perfect for those Australians just getting to the sunny season. For the rest of us North Americans maybe we can live vicariously through this record and try to remember what the sun feels like.
Dream Themes is out on Flightless Records.
