(Nuclear Blast)

Deathcore is a genre that most people consider a dying fad, with the multitudes of like-minded bands popping up left and right. Australia’s breath of life back into the genre lies within the new album Hate. Blast beat breakdowns get you on the right track on the first tune “Dead Sun,” before it bleeds away into headbanging riff-fest “Defective Breed.” Most deathcore bands also don’t really experiment with their guitars outside of breakdowns and standard bridge riffs, but Thy Art Is Murder goes outside of that limiting realm with extended atmosphere and breakdowns that are more mosh than dance-friendly. While there are moments that are a bit played out (such as the entire “Infinite Forms” track), there are enough solid points to keep you interested. (Ridge Briel)
