BREATHS are a heavy shoegaze band from Richmond, Virginia. They’re gearing up for the release of their new EP melt away on January 19. The first single is called “barbarella (melt away),” and it’s streaming right now on the band’s Bandcamp.
“Barbarella (melt away)” has a long, droning sound to it with a surprisingly upbeat chorus, making it sound almost like if the Deftones were a little bit of a happier band. The melodies are actually quite gorgeous, and they perfectly match the big, fuzzy wall of sound emanating from the guitars. The vocal melodies have a Fliter-esque quality to them, particularly reminiscent of Filter’s 1999 hit “Take a Picture.” It’s the quintessential marriage of power and melody, which bodes well for when the full EP drops on January 19.
