Today’s New Noise: Caleb Nichols

Caleb Nichols

Caleb Nichols is a queer poet and indie-folk artist out of San Luis Obispo, California. He’s releasing a new Christmas EP today called So This is Crimble on Kill Rock Stars. For those who don’t know, “Crimble” is a word The Beatles used to use for Christmas on their annual fan club 45s that they sent out for Christmas. One of the singles, “Crimble Medley”—which is a medley of The Beatles’ song “Christmas Time (Is Here Again)” and four songs from each of the Beatles’ solo catalogues—has a wild animated music video that’s streaming on YouTube.

The song opens on the melodies of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Christmas (War is Over)” before launching into a haunting and mesmerizing folksy rendition of the chorus from “Christmas Time (Is Here Again).” It then careens through a mishmash those two songs along with Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” and George Harrison’s “Ding Dong, Ding Dong” before throwing in “Photograph” by Ringo Starr at the end. Nichols finds fantastically creative ways to weave the five tracks together, making for a wonderfully fun Christmas tune. The animated music video features literal dancing beetles in slow, jerky animation that perfectly mirrors the beautiful strangeness of the song. Check out the video below.
