Carb on Carb are an emo revival duo from Whanganui, New Zealand. They just recently announced their new album Take Time which is due out on May 17. The latest single off the album, called “2009,” is currently streaming on all major platforms including Bandcamp and YouTube.
Despite the title “2009,” the single actually harkens back more to the early 2000s era of emo, where the delicate indie-pop and complex post-rock experiments had dominated the genre for the past decade gave way to the more pop punk influenced emo which would dominate the genre for the next decade to come and then some. Right at that focal point in a musical movement is where you find this song, and that’s absolutely beautiful. The catchy power chords are not harshly distorted to give an almost jangly punk style to perfectly compliment the pop hooks and aching emo melodies. At times with notes of New Found Glory and at other times with strong overtones of The Anniversary and a healthy helping of Pretty Girls Make Graves, the song is as musically steeped in nostalgia as it is lyrically.
