Cathari is a former doom metal band turned into a noisecore act, and they’re out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They recently released their first noisecore EP, the brilliantly titled record It Will Hurt the Entire Time You Are Alive. The EP is currently streaming on their Bandcamp.
The brief, four-song EP opens on the song “Philadelphia” which immediately kicks off with gnashing guitars and snarling vocals. You can hear vague undertones that tell you this used to be a doom band, but it’s got the uniquely spastic energy of noisecore all the way through. “It Will Hurt” then continues the assault, never letting up for a second, with a constant machine-gun-style barrage of power chords. Final track “Don’t Fear Death” dredges up more metallic vocals and a steady dose of blast beats, but it also has some distinctly hardcore drumming that lends it a different energy than their former doom metal style. This EP is positively brutal, but also a whole lot of fun. Check it out below.
