Cavern Womb is a progressive death metal band out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They just put out a new EP last week called Stages of Infinity and the whole thing is streaming on the band’s Bandcamp page.
The band refer to themselves in the description on their Bandcamp as esoteric death, and that’s an interesting way of describing them. There’s a lot of elements in here from doom to death to prog to psychedelia that make for a unique mixture.
The opening track “Exultation of Depraved Majesty” makes this clear as it moves through a number of distinct different movements changing up tempo, tone, and even subgenre on a dime, but always keeping a death metal-esque heaviness. Then “Amber Scourge” takes that to the next level with its proggy opening leading into an almost thrashy contrast before downshifting into doom a bit and then getting psychedelic.
Closing track “A Vessel for the Esoteric” is aptly named, as it gets mathy, complex, and experimental at times to create a really exhilarating journey across over seven minutes. This is not your run-of-the-mill death metal album, and that’s a big part of the fun. Check out the album below.
