On March 6, instrumental post-metal outfit Clouds Taste Satanic released their latest album, Berlin 2023, on Clouds Taste Satanic Records. Directly following last year’s Birmingham 2024, the band’s newest record is their sophomore release in a series of live-in-studio albums.
Recorded at Berlin’s Big Snuff Studios in May of 2023, Berlin 2023 is a live recording of Clouds Taste Satanic’s European tour setlist that year.
Blending doom metal with sludgy stoner rock, the band’s magnetic instrumentalism is overlaid with waves of Satanic aesthetics. Opening with the dark groove of “Second Sight,” the album’s opening track spills just over 21 minutes in length before bleeding into “Sun Death Ritual, Pts. 1-3.” Fueled by powerful guitar solos and a punchy momentum that builds over 10 minutes, the song is then followed by the album’s second half, consisting of “Spirits of the Green Desert, Pt. 4” and “Beast from the Sea.” With the former taking on a slower, jam-type melody throughout, the latter provides a cinematic and mystifying conclusion for Berlin 2023.
Decorating classic metal influences by way of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin with an intricate air of modernity, Clouds Taste Satanic’s latest musical effort flawlessly portrays everything the quartet is known for: intentional musicianship, calculated delivery, and an old school doom metal sound.
