Felicity are a self-described “trash rock” band from Orlando, Florida. For this holiday, they put out a cover of Wham’s “Last Christmas” that’s streaming on all major platforms including YouTube. If you’re participating in Whamageddon this year, don’t worry because, according to the official rules, listening to covers does not count!
I never thought I would hear a metalcore version of “Last Christmas,” but Felicity are apparently the band with the guts to do just that. And the song adapts to its new genre surprisingly well. Felicity definitely take a hacksaw to this song and rearrange it quite a bit rather than playing the standard melodies of the original, but I think it’s better that way. Covers should add something new to the song, and Felicity absolutely make this song their ow. Hearing a metal-style growl to the familiar lyrics “A man under cover but you tore him apart” is just fantastic. I’ve always held up Jimmy Eat World’s cover of this song as the definitive cover version, but Felicity are certainly giving Jimmy Eat World a run for their money on this one. Check out the cover below.
