Italian Bed are a punk/hardcore band from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Earlier this year, they released their debut EP which is titled Entertainment Buzz (Actually Not) via Failed Music Career (Indonesia) and Tenant Recordings (U.S.). The EP is currently streaming on Tenant Recordings’ Bandcamp and FMC’s YouTube channel.
Entertainment Buzz (Actually Not) is a powerful flash of old fashioned, quick and dirty punk rock. Stripped of any sort of frills, this is back-to-basics punk that brings the genre back to its core, packing in seven tracks in under 10 minutes. The album opens on a very stately guitar riff in “Intro/Complains” before giving way to jangly punk guitars and echoey, shouted vocals that sound like they’re delivered not by a microphone but through a megaphone. Then “Absurd Limitations” introduces a classic punk riff that gives way to bursts of hardcore, again with the same echoey vocals that will be a hallmark of this EP.
“Pretending to Exist” comes out of the gate swinging with some classic, D.I.Y., Minor Threat-esque hardcore that’s so raw you can hear the feedback from the instruments on the recording. “Alone” and “Impulsive Side” then follow with a minute of ’80s-style, gritty hardcore each. “The Brown Chair” does a nice job of varying up the tempo throughout the song to keep the EP’s rhythm from getting too monotonous. Finally “Not a Clean House” adds just the smallest dose of pop sensibilities to the hardcore proceedings, finishing strong on some epic hardcore riffs. This EP is a testament how little you need to create great punk songs and what great things you can accomplish if you take punk back to the basics. Check out the EP Below.
