Welcome to the working week, rockers! On this final full work week of the year, let’s start your week off with some Aussie punk. Australia has been churning out some of the best punk in the world as of late, and Melbourne’s Licklash are no exception. They recently released their debut EP Big Smile, and it’s streaming now on Bandcamp.
The EP starts out with “Party Line,” with a driving, relentlessly fast rhythm and a deceptively simple guitar part that makes for an absolutely killer punk track. The energy at the end when the vocalist starts really shouting is completely infectious. Then the brief track “Slip” keeps the energy going at full blast with cheeky lyrics and a good, old-fashioned punk vocal performance. “Control” almost seems to take on a country vibe within its punk fury while, once again, pulling off an angry passion in the vocal performance. Finally “Battleship” slows things down just slightly with a mesmerizing bass line and a vocal performance that switches between sultry and punchy. This EP is the epitome of everything that makes punk rock great, and it’s a band that deserves to be heard. Check out the EP below.
