Today’s New Noise: Mama Doom

Mama Doom

Mama Doom are a doom trio from Newburgh, New York. They’ve got a new album out on Interstellar Smoke Records called Blood Salt Sacrifice that’s streaming on Bandcamp, and the video for the single “Ring the Bell” is streaming on YouTube.

“Love ‘n Dead” kicks off the album and, while there are definite doom elements, the crooning femme vocals and the gorgeous melodies almost make for a pop-doom sound or maybe even a southern gothic feel. “Ring the Bell” continues with a bass-heavy jam with some keyboards to create a dark yet fun tune. “Devil in the Sky” then comes in with the staccato bass notes that eventually smooth out to something more fluid beneath the beautifully melodic vocals and keyboards that sound more like organ music being played in a pagan church.

“Lovely Home” has more of a lively beat that could almost be considered more punk than metal, while the other instruments keep building up the doom-goth elements. “Man Parts” is a short track, but it does an excellent job of setting a gothic mood before the vocals come in and the sound really opens up. “Burned into Nothing” finishes out the album with a long, slow build up of slow and steady drum beats and hauntingly infectious bass riffs until the song crescendos into something loud and noisy and then slowly works its way back down again.

The video for “Ring the Bell” uses imagery from the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and the famous urban legend story The Calico Coffin to create a nightmarish story that’s bathed in sepia tones and film grain to give the video a distinct retro feel to it. Check out the video below.
