Mutiny are a ska-metal supergroup formed during the pandemic made up of members of Voodoo Glow Skulls, Death by Stereo, Manic Hispanic, Dissidente, Adolescents, and PWRUP. That’s one hell of a stacked lineup. You don’t see a lot of ska-metal bands these days, but it’s not a new concept. There’s the nearly forgotten ska-metal heroes Thumper from Boston in the ’90s who should be a bigger name than they are.
Few bands these days dedicate themselves entirely to ska-metal, but of course there are bands like Flying Raccoon Suit and Voodoo Glow Skulls who dabble in it. Well, Mutiny is making a go of doing the ska-metal thing full-time, and their debut self-titled EP is out now on Ska Punk International Records. Plus, their entire album exists in both English and Japanese, with the Japanese version performed by Ryo and Shinji of Frail. There’s a manga that goes with the record, too, although you can now only get it through the SPI Record Club. They’ve got a lyric video for their opening track off the EP “This is a Eulogy,” and it’s streaming on YouTube.
Ska and metal aren’t the easiest genres to combine, but “This is a Eulogy” finds a way to pull off the loud-quiet-loud balance needed to fuse the two styles. When the metal is raging in this song, it’s loud and powerful, but then the song slows down to recharge in some ska grooves. It’s a disjointed song, but I have to admit that that’s what I like about it. It’s also a fiercely political song, which is what we’ve come to expect of frontman Efrem Schulz from his other projects. The lyric video has a comic book theme, in keeping with the manga concept that goes along with the EP. Check out the lyric video below.
