Today’s New Noise is hyperpop-emo artist saoirse dream who just released her sophomore LP grimdark via Lauren Records.

saoirse dream is the project of Catherine Egbert, who rose to fame online for her glitchy, shimmering hyperpop songs. Now, she’s adding a touch of emo sensibility to her work, harnessing artists like Anamanaguchi and They Are Gutting a Body of Water who blend upbeat electronica with darker, heavier genres. Lead single “death vs. dying” is an excellent entry point into Egbert’s contemporary work.

“’Death vs dying’ was the tone-setter for grimdark,” says Egbert. “I have a hard time writing from a place of anger, but the exercise of writing for a fictional character opened that up for me. It probably won’t surprise you to hear a trans woman say she’s got a lot to be angry about. In finally feeling that anger for myself, the record poured out of me.”

Much of grimdark touches on these themes, like the rage-fueled “killer bees,” which focuses on the violence often faced by the trans community, and the necessary retribution that follows. Egbert’s mix of gritty and sparkling lyrics shines through, even in moments of desperation and oppression.

saoirse dream will be touring extensively across the U.S. and Europe this autumn. See the tour dates and details below:
