Today’s New Noise: The Blamed

The Blamed are a long-running Christian punk band originally from California who are now based out of Illinois. They recently put out a new holiday-themed covers EP called Reese’n For the Season—featuring several notable guest stars—which is currently streaming on their Bandcamp where you can also buy the EP on CD, but hurry because there’s only 100 copies.

The EP opens on the title track which is a cover of Christian metal band Stryper’s “Reason for the Season,” with the spelling slightly changed to reflect the fact that Five Iron Frenzy frontman Reese Roper makes a guest appearance on this track singing lead vocals. It also features Living Sacrifice guitarist Rocky Gray. The Blamed turn the classic metal song into a raging hardcore punk track, complete with a music video of the band members recording their respective parts. The religious message of the song might be off-putting to non-Christian punks, but there’s still plenty to love about this song musically even if you’re not as devout as the band.

The rest of the EP sees the band putting their punk rock take on classic religious Christmas tunes, each with a different guest star doing lead vocals. “Hark the Herald Angel Sings” features Tobin Bawinkel of Flatfoot 56 and his wife Vanessa of Il Neige. “Joy to the World” features vocals from Kris Klein of One21 and Squad Five-0 alongside his wife Jamie. And “Away in the Manger” has Sally Grayson from Black Swift on vocals and Jesse Sprinkle of Poor Old Lu, Demon Hunter, and Dead Poetic on drums. It’s a star-studded Christian rock Christmas spectacular that no fan of the genre will want to miss.
